Cowboys Legend Makes Shocking Remarks About Jason Garrett

The Dallas Cowboys failed to make the playoffs last season, after finishing with the best record in the NFL the previous season, which has led some to wonder about the future of head coach Jason Garrett.

Last week, former Cowboy and 2018 Hall of Fame inductee, Terrell Owens, stirred the pot during a radio appearance, saying it was “mind-boggling” that Garrett was still employed by the Cowboys. This week, Darren Woodson, who was a member of three Super Bowl winning teams with Dallas, offered his own opinion about Garrett.

“You know we just don’t know,” said Woodson. “Every year is a ‘make-it-or-break-it’ for not only Jason, but for every coach in this league. Look, Jason [has got] his work cut out for him. It’s going to be tough. He’s lost one of the true leaders in this locker room in Jason Witten.

“The year before that he lost Tony Romo, his starting quarterback. This is a young football team. I look at it as every year, you have to start all over again and Jason Garrett understands that. …It’s a not-prolonged league. He’s going to have to win some games this year.

“I think they have to get into the playoffs for him to survive and keep his job. I think that’s the expectation that Jerry Jones has and Stephen Jones has — that this team, they feel like it’s a playoff football team. And they put all the onus and all the pressure on the head coach to get the job done. If you’re asking if this is a ‘make-or-break’ season?

“Absolutely. I think they have to find a way to get into the playoffs this year.”

If Woodson was speaking about any other head coaching position, he might have a point. But Garrett seems to have the same type of hold on Jones that Marvin Lewis has on Mike Brown, in the sense that despite his 63-57 record and two playoff appearances in eight years, Jones hasn’t fired him.

If the Cowboys finish 8-8 or 9-7, chances are Garrett will return for another year. If they finish with a losing record, Jones might finally consider making a coaching change.
