Cowboys Add Depth To Roster, Make A Few Surprising Cuts

Every year, when teams gather for OTAs, fans are excited because it means training camp and preseason are just around the corner. For the NFL teams, it is a time for them to add some players they think can compete for spots on their teams and get rid of players they feel they don’t need.

This week, the Dallas Cowboys added former Seattle Seahawks linebacker Eric Perkins and former sixth round pick Darius Jackson. The Cowboys also signed defensive tackle Antwaun Woods and wide receiver Mekale McKay.

To make room for the four new players, the Cowboys released defensive tackle DeQuinton Osborne, offensive guard Jay Robertson, linebacker Eric Shockley and wide receiver Malik Early, giving them a chance to sign elsewhere.

Woods, who went undrafted in 2016 out of USC, is a big lineman that can help the Cowboys against the run, which is something they struggled with at times last season. He was previously with the Tennessee Titans, who released him a few days before he signed with the Cowboys. He will be reunited with offensive lineman Damien Mama, whom he played with at USC.

McKay will have a tougher time making the roster because the Cowboys have many players competing for one of the starting receiver jobs. Since signing with the Indianapolis Colts in 2016, McKay has been a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Denver Broncos, Tennessee Titans and Chicago Bears.

After bouncing around for the past two seasons, McKay will be hoping he has found a new home in Dallas, but he has an uphill battle to go.

With so many players trying out for one of the wide receiver spots, McKay will have to outwork a lot of players during OTAs. If he makes it to training camp, he will have a good chance of making the final roster.
