Blake Jarwin’s Career Day Leads to NFC Offensive Player of the Week Honors
The purpose of the Cowboys’ unorthodox move to play mostly starters against the Giants in Week 17 (despite already having sealed an NFC East crown) was to build momentum and allow the offense to continue to develop with new and old contributors.
Garrett’s gambit worked like a charm…especially at the TE position.
Tight end Blake Jarwin had the best game of his career against the Big Blue, totaling 7 catches for 119 yards and 3 touchdowns. The undrafted free agent from Oklahoma State had only 20 catches for less than 200 yards after 15 games this season, and his best single-game statistical output to-date was a 7-catch, 56-yard performance against the Philadelphia Eagles in the ‘Boys 29-23 overtime triumph on December 9th.
Social media went wild as the unheralded pass-catcher lit up the New York defense with several impressive catches. Jarwin’s 2nd TD catch of the day was a real beauty, as the TE found a seam in the middle of the Giants’ coverage and raced to snag a nearly-overthrown missile from QB Dak Prescott before backpedaling and landing deep in the end zone.
Jarwin is being praised for his smooth routes and tough north-south running after the catch. But his sure-handed receiving skills also deserve mention. An agile and effective blocker at 6’5” and 260 pounds, the youngster has been targeted just 35 times in 2018-19 but has snagged the football on 27 of those pass attempts. His only bad day as a receiver came in Big D’s miserable shut-out loss to the Indianapolis Colts on December 16th, in which he was targeted 7 times but only came up with 4 catches.
The loss in Indy was the only game all year in which the Cowboys were held without a touchdown.
