Cowboys Expected To Sign Star Defensive Player
Despite finishing 9-7 and failing to qualify for the playoffs, the Dallas Cowboys have remained in the news due to all the staff and roster turnover they have had since the season ended.
With questions surrounding the future of players such as Dez Bryant, the one player Cowboys’ fans don’t have to worry about, at least for next season, is free agent defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence.
In 2017, Lawrence was the most consistent player on the Cowboys roster. The defensive end finished the season with 58 tackles, 14.5 sacks, and four forced fumbles, which will make him a sought after free agent during the offseason.
However, Lawrence isn’t expected to hit the free agent market because the Cowboys will do everything they can to keep him with the team, even if it’s only for another year.
Right now, the Cowboys have the option of working out a long-term deal with Lawrence, but they will have to make a few roster moves to stay under the salary cap.
Even if they can’t come to an agreement on a new deal, the Cowboys have the option of using the franchise tag on Lawrence. If they do, he will be paid $17 million next season, but he likely won’t be happy about playing on a one-year deal, which will make it more difficult to resign him when the season is over.
The good news for Cowboys fans is despite what many think or say about Jerry Jones, he takes care of the players he believes can help the team win so I expect him to make Lawrence a fair offer.
If the Cowboys can sign Lawrence to a long term deal, they can turn their focus to offensive lineman Zack Martin, who is also a free agent.
