NFL To Finally Address Catch Rule During Offseason

For the last five years, NFL fans have been trying to get the league to address their controversial catch rule, which has affected the outcome of a lot of games because the referees and league officials can’t seem to agree on what a catch is.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has apparently heard enough complaints and has decided that the league will address the issue during the offseason.

“Fans want catches,” said Goodell, the league’s commissioner since the 2006 season. “What we’ve gotta try to do…is to bring some clarity to that.

“Particularly in the going to the ground that I think has created a lot of the confusion because it’s a different rule when you’re going to the ground than when you’re on the sideline or when you’re in the end zone.

“I think that’s what we’re focusing on. The competition committee is going to be bringing this up in February and March, and I hope that we will be able to address this in a way that will bring more clarity and frankly more excitement.”

The Pittsburgh Steelers were on the wrong side of a catch rule controversy this season when a touchdown that would have given them the win over the New England Patriots in week 15 was called an incomplete pass after it was initially ruled a touchdown.

After the loss, Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin said the league would have to address the rule.

“I think that we all can acknowledge that all of this needs to be revisited,” Tomlin said. “It’s not just that play. We’re having similar discussions week in and week out. So as a member of the committee, I acknowledge that we’ve got our work cut out for us this offseason regarding a number of those things.”
