Dak Prescott Makes Surprising Remarks About Contract Situation
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott led the team to the best record in the NFC in his rookie season, winning the Rookie of the Year award in the process. Last season, the quarterback regressed, leading some to wonder if he is the team’s quarterback of the future, or if the team should give his backup Cooper Rush some playing time.
During the offseason, quarterbacks like San Francisco 49ers starter, Jimmy Garoppolo, and Minnesota’s Kirk Cousins, signed big contracts, which led reporters to ask Prescott if he has started talking with the Cowboys about getting a new deal.
Despite his play last season and the fact that he will face some pressure from Rush this season, Prescott isn’t too worried about the team giving him a new deal, and believes his play will dictate his pay.
“I know if I play well, they’ll take care of me,” Prescott said when asked about getting a new contract. “It’s just part of it. All these guys out here getting these contracts, they’re getting them deservedly so because of the way that they’ve been playing.
“My [focus] this year is just winning games. That’s my main goal. That’s really my only goal, not any individual success or numbers or worry about the contract. It’s about going in and winning enough games to get us to the playoffs and then winning one game at a time at that point. The rest of the stuff will come.”
Prescott, who is going into the third year of the four-year deal he signed after getting drafted, will make $681,000 this season. If he plays as well or better than he did during his rookie season, the Cowboys will likely give him a big contract. If he struggles, the team might wait until his contract runs out before resigning him or turn to Cooper Rush as their starting quarterback.
